EULIS! The History of Love Paschal Beverly Randolph 9781162629193 Books Reviews
My 1874 edition of this book has 221 pages. This Kessinger copy has 144 pages. This seems rather incomplete. A complete PDF of the 1904 4th Edition is available free through Google Books.
EUILIS is a testament to the power that Eros has in human life, reading this work you can see that Dr. Randolph was a man of much earnestness and depth of soul. Dr. Randolph's philosophical ethos can be traced all the way back to ancient Egyptian civilization. The average Ancient Egyptian had a profoundly deeper understanding of the power contained in human sexuality and it's ability to transform the soul than many of the so-called experts one is likely to encounter browsing the psychology section of modern-day bookstores. And this spiritual knowledge is what Dr. Randolph explores and explains in this essay.
Paschal Beverly Randolph M.D. (October 8, 1825 - July 29, 1875) was a free Black-American who founded America's first Rosicrucian society. He was even a close conifidant and advisor to then President Abraham Lincoln. There are written records in American's Rosicrucian libraries which indicate that Randolph wrote Lincoln's speeches, including the famous "Gettysburg Address".
Randolph writings influenced such luminaries as Eliphas Lévi, and H. P. Blavatsky, both persons accredited with being the progenitors of the Hermetic revival. Both Levi and Blavastsky knew Randolpha and they utilized his knowledge obtained from Randolph's works. But they were not the only historic figures to utlilize his theses without giving credit. Aleister Crowley especially based a lot of his magickal practices on the knowledge contained in this book. Crowley's constant references to sacrifices which garnered him a reputation as a devil worshiper were actual coded references to achieving gnosis through sexual means. And Franz Bardon's "Initiation into Hermetics" utilized knowledge from Randolph's "Seership! The Magnetic Mirror" to compile his book.
You may be wondering at this point, "If Paschal Beverly Randolph was so great then why haven't I heard of him before?" Well history is never totally inclusive, but more importantly; there was a agenda to destroy the reputation and achievements of Dr. Randolph during his life time by some of the same Esoteric luminaries who appropriated his writings and research. Dr. Randolph was charged with dispensing obscene writings that corrupted the public and drag through a few legal cases which basically bankrupted him; does that sounds familiar to anyone. As the old saying goes" Though times may change, certain things remain the same!
Paschal Beverly Randolph M.D. is truly the unsung Father and Hero of the Hermetic Revival. And I further refuse to use the term "New Age Movement" because I find that term quite oxymoronic because there is nothing new about these studies and practices.
Randolph's philosophical discourse is an interesting read as he attempts to explain why the world is so messed up. Couples who are not magnetically aligned are producing "angular" children, incomplete souls, which in turn are filling the world, especially, as Randolph sees it, America with magnetically mis-aligned misfits. Randolph's language is clearly formed by his oratory background, and his ideas a fusion of Swedenborg, Sufi-ism and Emersonian idealism. As a black writer, he has been under-appreciated, and perhaps shunned because of his extensive discussion of sex and his prescriptive use of hashish. A very interesting read.
This book is the sage by which baser desires for sex can be raised into noble ones of character if one applies it. The desire for sex may be raised into one's inner truth which can have no limit. This all depends on one's thinking deeply into it and persistence in living it.
Words can not describe the overall value of this book.
