As an adult learner, returning to college to pursue a second career, I was very anxious about how my rusty writing skills would measure up to today's rigorous academic standards. The strength of Writing Well in School and Beyond, lies in all of the very practical tips and hints that the author lays out in a very easy-to-read style. I could pick this book up, turn to any page, and practice my writing whenever I got the chance. I was one of those students who mistakenly believed that writers were just born that way. There is a continuous thread of encouragement, woven into every chapter, that consistently let me know that writing is a learned skill and one that I can actually develop with consistent practice. I have a son in high school and a daughter just starting college and I will purchase this book for each of them, just for the pleasure of watching their skills, and their confidence, improve.
As an English professor for almost 35 years, I've taught a lot of writing as part of literature classes and, especially early on, in composition classes. Until now the most helpful writing guide I've used is THE ELEMENTS OF STYLE, the classic coauthored by the great essayist E. B. White. I liked this book--and still do--for its conciseness, straight forwardness, and user friendliness. That said, if I now had to pick just one book to quickly engage and empower student writers, I would unhesitatingly choose WRITING WELL IN SCHOOL AND BEYOND. At a time when "rhetorical theory" has elaborated the craft of writing beyond at least my own interest and patience, Berger's little gem returns good writing to the realm of good sense and deftly makes the possible practical. I'm certain that a small investment of time and attention to the invitingly presented, wise advice in these pages will improve almost anyone's writing. As either a primer for beginners or a refresher course for the more advanced, this book gets the job done. I've ordered four copies two for my college student sons, two for their college professor parents. And I will strongly promote it to my students.
